Emily booked Wine Night In on a bit of a whim. The group had rented three Airbnb cottages across Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire, for a weekend away, and she wanted to line up something that felt a bit more interesting than just ending up in the pub again. There was no birthday, no hen party, no anniversary and no big reason for it. Just twelve friends away together for the weekend, with one free evening and a good excuse to do something different.
The group included Noah and Florence, George and Emily, Freddie and Sienna, Charlie and Evie, plus Alfie, Ella, Oscar and Daisy. They had spent most of the day hiking around the Cotswolds, so by early evening everyone was ready to sit down somewhere warm and stay there for a while.

So when Jonny arrived with the wines and set everything up, there was a short moment of confusion followed by immediate interest. Alfie looked at Oscar and said, “This is not what I packed for”.
Within twenty minutes, he was the loudest voice in the room, passionately debating the merits of the Henri Nordoc Chardonnay like he had been waiting his whole life for the chance.
That is often how these evenings go. People think a wine tasting sounds more formal than it really is, then they relax into it almost straight away. Once the first glass is poured and the conversation gets going, it just feels like a very good night in with a bit more direction to it.
Daisy ended up winning the blind tasting round outright, which nobody saw coming, including Daisy. That gave the group plenty to laugh about, especially as some of the louder opinions in the room turned out to be completely wrong. It was a relaxed, unhurried evening, which was exactly right after a long day on the trails. Nobody was in a rush, nobody needed to go anywhere, and the whole group could just let the evening come to them.
The following week, Emily ordered a case of the Henri Nordoc Chardonnay, and the group WhatsApp, which had gone very quiet for about forty-eight hours while everyone recovered from the weekend, suddenly came back to life with people asking when they were doing it again. Even the supermarket oven food got a good review, although nobody was in a hurry to say that during the tasting itself.
