Mark and Claire celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at home in Cheam, Surrey, inviting three other couples who had been part of their lives for years. The group of eight wanted an evening that felt personal and relaxed, and Mark had said beforehand that he wanted to do something more memorable than booking a restaurant table.
The plan was to pour a good mix of reds and whites so everyone would have something they enjoyed, along with one bottle that felt a little more special to mark the occasion. Rather than turning it into a lesson about wine, the aim was to enjoy good bottles together and let the conversation take care of itself.
We arrived early to set up the glassware and tasting mats so everything was ready before the couples sat down. Once the first glasses were poured, Jonny explained how the evening would work and encouraged everyone to say what they thought without worrying about the right terminology.
As the wines were poured, the conversation naturally shifted between the tasting and stories from over the years. The wines did their job in the background, giving people something to react to without taking over the evening. Near the end, Jonny paused before the final pour and brought out a premium Champagne that Mark had arranged in advance without Claire knowing. She looked surprised at first, then the rest of the room caught on and started cheering.
A few weeks later, Steve and Rachel, one of the other couples, booked their own Wine Night In for a dinner party at their house, which tends to happen when a group sees how well it works in a home setting.
For a 25th anniversary, hosting the tasting at home meant the group could sit together properly, talk without background noise and enjoy the wines at their own pace. It suited the occasion because it felt natural.
