We recently hosted Jenny’s 40th birthday wine tasting at her home in Dorking in Surrey, where she had invited ten close friends to celebrate the start of a new decade. She wanted something that felt different from a standard dinner or drinks party, but she was also clear that the evening should feel relaxed and welcoming rather than formal. The group included a mix of confident wine drinkers and others who simply enjoy a glass without knowing much about regions or grape varieties, so the focus was on creating an atmosphere where no one felt uncomfortable or judged.
Before the evening, Jenny asked if we could lean more towards white wines. Our usual format includes three whites and three reds, but for this group, we adjusted the selection to suit their preferences. The idea was to give enough contrast to keep it interesting, while keeping the wines approachable so that everyone felt confident joining in.
We arrived early to set up the glassware and tasting mats so everything was ready before guests sat down. Once people had a glass in hand, Jonny explained how the evening would run in simple terms and encouraged everyone to say what they thought without worrying about whether it was right or wrong. The tasting moved at a comfortable pace, with light comparisons and conversation around the table rather than technical explanations.
One of the best moments came halfway through when a guest became completely convinced that her favourite wine of the night must be the most expensive bottle on the table. She said it with real certainty and even tried to guess the price, assuming it had to be something special because she liked it so much. When Jonny revealed that it was actually around the £15 mark, there was a brief pause before the whole table started laughing. It shifted the tone in a good way and reminded everyone that taste is personal and does not always match what people expect.
By the end of the two hours, the group had tried six wines and had a clearer sense of what they enjoyed, even if they would not describe it in technical language. A few days later, twelve bottles from the tasting were reordered, which usually says more than anything people mention on the night itself.
For Jenny’s 40th in Dorking, keeping the event at home meant everyone could stay in one place and enjoy the evening without thinking about transport or moving on to another venue.
