30th Birthday Wine Tasting in Twickenham

Birthday wine tasting at home in Twickenham with friends enjoying guided wine tasting games

Twickenham in South West London, and this one was a 30th birthday at Ollie and Ellen’s place with two other couples joining them. Small group, close friends, everyone comfortable enough with each other that nobody was pretending to be sophisticated all evening, which honestly suited the night perfectly.

When Ellen booked it, she gave me a bit of a warning beforehand. Ollie was not really a wine person. Beer, spirits, that sort of thing. Wine had never really landed with him, and she said she wanted the evening to actually change that, rather than just confirm to him that wine wasn’t for him.

So straight away, I knew this needed to stay relaxed. No wine snobbery, no technical overload, no making people feel like they needed the “right” answers. Just good wines and a fun night.

We kept it to the standard three reds and three whites, and once everyone had settled in with the first glass, the whole thing got moving pretty quickly. Because the group knew each other well, the tasting games became competitive almost immediately. Lots of arguing over flavours, people backing themselves, people changing answers at the last second.

At the start, Ollie was exactly how Ellen had described him. Polite, interested enough, but definitely a bit sceptical underneath it all. You could tell he expected to sit through it more than to properly get involved.

But by about the fourth wine, something changed.

He suddenly started asking proper questions. Regions, grapes, why certain wines tasted completely different from others, why one felt lighter than another, even though they looked similar in the glass. Not in a showy way either. You could just tell he’d got genuinely interested.

That was probably the funniest part of the whole evening because everyone else noticed it happening as well, including Ellen.

By the end of the night, one of his mates pointed out he’d basically been talking about wine for two hours straight. Ollie didn’t really have much of a comeback to that because it was completely true.

And honestly, that’s exactly why nights like this work well. A lot of people think wine is either too serious or just not for them, but once it’s explained in a normal way and people can compare different styles side by side, something clicks.

The following week Ollie got in touch himself to order a case of the Pacífico Sur Reserva Pinot Noir we’d tasted on the night, which apparently nobody in the room saw coming, least of all Ellen.
